The Fall of Nil

The light shines in my eyes and I wake up for what feels like the first time. At first I am disoriented—the way you are after waking up from sleeping over at a friend’s house as a kid. The only difference is that this is the house that I grew up in, in my room, and everything is how I left it.

The Trial of Alison Fairchild

Alison saw a picture once of her mother, as a child, standing in front of the court
building. Her mother, even though she was younger than Alison in the photo, appeared gigantic.
Yet she was dwarfed by the enormous monument of justice that stood behind her.

Now, the building has been ravaged by years of war, followed by years more of neglect.
There are few sections left standing amid piles of rubble. The remaining pillars are cracked and
crumbling. Above the entrance is half of a Latin phrase that Alison does not understand.

The Metro Erasure Project

The process of the Metro Erasure Project is taking a Metro Newspaper that someone has left as litter, blacking out selected text in an article to make an erasure poem, then abandoning it or putting it back into the Metro News box for the next person to read and enjoy or discard.

The I-Know-I-Can Method

LESTER:        Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I’m so humbled to have you all here tonight. I am willing to guess that you have come because you feel there is something missing in your life. There is some itch you can’t scratch. That despite everything that is wonderful and beautiful in the world, you still don’t feel quite fulfilled. If that is what brings you here, then you have come to the right place. It is my goal to make certain that anyone who reads my books or comes to my seminars reach the enrichment we all deserve.

Talking to Myself

THE FIRST MAN is old and downtrodden.

He has a long, shaggy, grey beard.

His clothes are soiled and torn.

THE SECOND MAN is young and clean-shaven.

He wears a three-piece suit, and a smug smile of self satisfaction.

THE THIRD MAN could be anyone.

The Mountain Air

Abe and his son hike for three hours when they come to the campsite. Here, away from the city and all the disruptions it brings, he is going to teach his boy how to be man.

Our Home

Before she walked out the door and never made it home.

The Chump’s Serenade

Eve

MAX:

We have all survived a great deal
of tragedy. We have lost our
friends and family. We watched as
the human race poisoned our water
and our air, and fought and slaughtered
one another nearly to the point of
extinction.
But in there we are blessed with
the opportunity to start over.

The Storyteller

Aunt Nancy was known for her soft golden hair and delicate features. More so, she was recognized for her gentle voice and vivid imagination. It is these traits that made her the town’s storyteller. At times of drought, the whole town would gather around to hear her stories of hope. At times of uncertainty, everyone would listen to her parables for guidance. At night, she would tell the children tales of wonder and enchantment, assuring they had pleasant dreams.

UTV

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY Shot from a stationary camera, with the UTV logo at the bottom right of the screen.

The Daily Grind

After a while, you kind of get used to the smell of rotting human flesh. At first, it's overwhelming, like walking into someone's house who cooks with too much garlic and onions, but after 6 months it doesn't smell that bad. It doesn't smell good either. It just smells normal.

ResErection

My shoes stick to the floor. My arms stick to the table. The beer tastes like piss. The karaoke singers are terrible.  And two of the three urinals are obstructed by tape and a garbage bag.  Welcome to Brew’s Pub.

I wonder why I even bother coming here.

Then I see her...

Election Day

I am woken up by a crack of sunlight that breaks its way through the lid of the dumpster I slept in last night. I get up from my bed of pizza boxes on a base of garbage bags. I open the lid of my new home and embrace the morning air. It's the first time I have seen the sunrise in years. Just yesterday, I was sleeping in a nice warm bed in a heated condo. Even still, today is a beautiful day. Why? It is election day and I have $342,467 in my bag. At a dollar a vote, that's 342,467 votes.
